Details for Proposal & Paper Submission
Click here to download the 2009 Paper Proposal Form (Microsoft Word).
- To propose a paper for the 2009 meeting, complete the Paper Proposal Form, and return it to the EHS Vice-President, Ervin Stutzman, no later than May 1, 2009. This form requires only a title and a seventy-five word abstract. Electronic submissions are much preferred. Please email them to: stutzerv@emu.edu.
- The EHS Executive Committee will review the paper proposals and select 15 to be presented by the authors of the papers during the annual meeting. The EHS Executive Committee will notify members about June 9, 2009 whether their proposals have been accepted.
- Papers selected for presentation must be submitted to the EHS President in an electronic version by August 1, 2009, using the Guidelines for Submission and Presentation of Papers shown below. Late submissions may result in forfeiting the privilege of presenting the paper during the conference. Papers not selected for presentation may still be submitted by the August 1 deadline for possible publication on the EHS website. The electronic version will be posted to the EHS website by September 15, 2009 so that the EHS members can read the papers online prior to their arrival at the conference or print out copies for their use.
Please submit paper proposals to Ervin Stutzman at stutzerv@emu.edu if possible. Otherwise, send them to him at the following address:

Writing Guidelines
Write your manuscript single-spaced, double-spacing between paragraphs, with no indention at the start of a paragraph, using one-inch margins. Times New Roman font (12 point) is preferred. Only the left margin should be justified. Number the pages in the upper right corner. Do not use a running head. Where appropriate, use first and second level headings.
Follow the Chicago Manual of Style, 14th or later edition. Notes should be placed at the end of the manuscript, not at the foot of the page. Notes should be reasonably close to the style advocated in the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers 3rd edition (New York: The Modern Language Association of America, 1988) by Joseph Gibaldi and Walter S. Achtert. That style is basically as follows for research papers:
a. From a book:
note: 23. John Dewey, The Study of Ethics: A Syllabus (Ann Arbor, 1894), 104.
b. From a periodical:
note: 5. Frederick Barthelme, "Architecture," Kansas Quarterly 13:3 (September 1981): 77-78.
c. Avoid the use of op. cit.
Dewey 111.
If you plan on using Greek or Hebrew in the paper, please use the fonts provided freely at http://www.bibleworks.com/fonts.html to ensure others can read them as well.
Page one of the paper should include the title, author's name and affiliation, plus a seventy-five word abstract. After four lines of spacing, the paper should begin.
Electronic Submission
The electronic version of the paper can be sent on a CD or by email to the EHS Vice-President's address (see below). Microsoft Word is the preferred software for the papers.
Any charts or graphs should be sent additionally in ".jpg" or ".gif" format. This is to facilitate presentation on the website.
Send submissions by August 1 to the following:
Ervin Stutzman
Eastern Mennonite Seminary
1200 Park Road,
Harrisonburg, VA 22802
stutzerv@emu.edu
Conference Presentation
Since papers will presumably have been downloaded from the web site and read prior to the conference, please plan on using only the first 10 minutes of your presentation time to touch on the highlights of the paper. Reserve the next 20-25 minutes for discussion and Q&A interaction on its contents.
All Submitters Please Note:
The Journal of the Evangelical Homiletics Society has the first right of refusal for all papers presented at the EHS
meeting. The right of refusal expires thirty (30) days following the conference.
Also: the paper selected for the Willhite Award is to be published first in the Journal of the Evangelical Society. Otherwise, the award will be withdrawn.
